Anatomical variations of the internal jugular vein: implications for successful cannulation and risk of carotid artery puncture.

INTRODUCTION Complications occur in over 15% of central venous cannulations, often a result of anatomical variations. This study aimed to determine the anatomical variations of the internal jugular vein (IJV), demonstrate the likely success of cannulation and assess the risk of carotid artery (CA) injury when catheterising the IJV using the external landmarks technique at various degrees of hea...

Real-time ultrasound-guided catheterisation of the internal jugular vein: a prospective comparison with the landmark technique in critical care patients

INTRODUCTION Central venous cannulation is crucial in the management of the critical care patient. This study was designed to evaluate whether real-time ultrasound-guided cannulation of the internal jugular vein is superior to the standard landmark method. METHODS In this randomised study, 450 critical care patients who underwent real-time ultrasound-guided cannulation of the internal jugular...

Normal jugular bulb oxygen saturation.

BACKGROUND Normal values of the jugular bulb oxygen saturation were obtained in 1942 and in 1963. Correct catheter positioning was not confirmed radiologically. OBJECTIVES To replicate the measurements during angiographic catheterisation of the jugular bulb. METHODS Oxygen saturation in the jugular bulb (SjO(2)), inferior petrosal sinus (SipsO(2)), and internal jugular vein was bilaterally ...

An unusual course of the thoracic duct in relation to the vertebral vessels.

A variation in the course of the thoracic duct was found in the cervical portion of a male cadaver during routine dissection of the head and neck region for undergraduate students. The thoracic duct, while arching laterally above the clavicle, was coursing posterior to the vertebral vein but anterior to the vertebral artery; it normally passes anterior to both the vertebral vein and artery. To ...

Vertebral arteriovenous fistula: an unusual complication of Swan-Ganz catheter insertion.

The leading causes of trauma to the major craniocerebral vessels include penetrating and non penetrating trauma [1 , 2]. Because the vertebral artery is confined to the incomplete bony canal formed by the successive foramina in the transverse processes of the upper cervical vertebrae, it is less susceptible to penetrating injury than is the carotid artery [2]. A review of the literature has unc...
